Dirty Penny – Take it Sleezy (Released – 2007)
With so much great sleazy glam rock coming out of Sweden it’s a pleasant change to find something like this coming from the US. I’m not sure where to start with this delicious sleazy offering from Californian band, Dirty Penny. If I compiled a list of my top CDs for 2007 this would be high at the top of that list.
Think Crashdiet leaning more towards the dirty side of sleaze.
Things start off in suitably suggestive style with the first track “Midnight Ride” and follow with tunes that are all perfect slabs of glam rock just the way it should be. At first I thought “Black n’ Blue” was a bit out of place on this, it’s almost jazz rock n’ roll but even that fits. “Vendetta” is probably the cream of the crop. Hell, all of these songs are gems. The disc closes with an acoustic version of Sleeze Disease. It’s a fantastic rendition and sounds like a completely different song to the heavier version.
Binge Daniels has a voice made for this type of music, the backing vocals are massive and the hooks huge.
If you are looking for lyrics that resemble complex rocket science, you won’t find it here. The lyrics are simple and sometimes cheesy, (“Take a Bite” being a classic example of this) but perfect for what this music is about. “Scream and Shout” may be the exception to the cliché lyrics that the rest of the tunes have; but this kind of rock is meant to be mindless, sexy and fun and Dirty Penny deliver exactly that.
Although nothing is perfect, I can’t find a filler or dud song on this. This is worth every Dirty Penny you have and simply a must have for sleaze rock lovers. Absolutely killer.

These guys are awesome. I saw them at Rocklahoma, partied with them and enjoyed every minute. This is the most refreshing sound in music since the 80’s. The moment they sign up for Rocklahoma 2008, I will. If you truly like 80’s hair bands, this disk is a must buy.
These guys sound great! I love the 80’s glam scene & it’s hard to find bands doing it these days that aren’t sub-quality. Too many of them seem to forget that without the catchy songs they’re just a bunch of guys trying to look cool. Dirty Penny have definitely turned my head, they’re catchy as!
Great review too – love your work Tania. And yours too HRH, Glam month goes off!
Happy Thoughts & Rock on.
Don’t you find it sad that someone would put themselves on the line like that (and that’s what sleeping around does) just to get close to the famous (or semi-famous in this case)? Don’t you think these bands are taking advantage of self-esteem issues? I know that’s a generalization and there may be exceptions, but by and large, I think it’s safe to say that those who would sleep with someone famous just get a taste of that fame, as synthetic as it is, probably have some issues.
Bless you Rockin heart for sponsoring Glam Month HRH!
Great review Tania!
This is gonna go in the library ASAP….
Good review and great album! Finally, a new glam band from the U.S.! haha
I’m a female and I dont find the video offensive at all. I think its cool! the (possibly sad) fact is that some women are like this in real life, especially around bands so they do get treated like objects but they don’t seem to mind
Tania is one of three writers at HRH now. She is a super cool Glam Fan, and is a regular visitor here.
I’ve had the disc since Rocklahoma. One of my favorites, but the video really is “dirty” if you know what I mean.

They sound alright although I bet if you asked them when the first glam bands hit the scene, they’d say the early 80s. I like that they don’t waste time being smooth and polished and focus instead on the energy, but a little bit of swagger would help them immensely. The video was as stupid as anything in the 80s. Why is misogyny deemed so cool by these goofballs? Fo those who would ask, “What’s wrong with being sexy?” I would say nothing. But the total objectification of women does really bother me. I guess I should consider though that bands like this are completely willing to objectify themselves as well, so maybe my complaint isn’t fair. Besides, at least all the women looked over the age of consent which is something we probably wouldn’t get in a Supagroup video!
I am supposed to be getting a copy of this soon and I am looking forward to it.
