Black Robot – S/T (Release Year – 2009)
What happens when three three former members of Buckcherry reunite? They have transformed into a new powerhouse rock band in the form of Black Robot!
Black Robot taps into the influences of classic hard rock acts like AC/DC and Aeromsith, while creating something new and refreshingly cool.
Black Robot is powered by the vocals of Detroit native Huck Johns. If you haven’t heard Johns sing before, you are in for a treat. Producer Dave Cobb pushes Johns to new heights. He sounds great on this CD.
Johns vocals are not the only high point here. The rest of band featuring Yogi Lonich on guitars, Jonathan Brightman on bass and Devon Glenn on drums play their asses off on this CD. I am pleasantly surprised on how different this material is from their past music.
If you aren’t hooked with big stadium anthem “Baddass”, the cover of J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine” will surely pull you in. Black Robot could have easily tried to mimic the Eric Clapton version of this song, but instead opted for something completely different. It is almost as if the band was possessed by the spirit of Bon Scott when they recorded this song. This is a very cool cover tune.
“Momma Don’t Cry” has an awesome Jimi Hendrix like vibe to it. Check out the jangly riffs on this tune, and you will see what I mean.
“I’m In Love” slows down the pace with an a very cool ballad. This song could be a big hit for the band if it catches on.
“Money” is an infectious upbeat tune that is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The lyrics are simple, but the music is quite fun. Who doesn’t like money?
“In My Car” has a good, classic 70’s rock vibe to it. This song reminds me of “Toys in the Attic” era Aerosmith. I like this tune a lot.
“Love On A .45” sees Johns channeling his inner Zeppelin on this catchy tune. Great Tune!
Black Robot has proved once again that ROCK IS NOT DEAD. The band has cranked out one great debut. This CD is one of my new favorites this year! Check them out at this link!!

I got a link to these songs last year. I’m all for a band blowin up if it’s legit, but refresh their page and 84 hits? Thats a bit much. I just calculated that they had 1311 hits just by me refreshing 4 times. Hmmmm
Some of the songs are really good. Haven’t listened to them much since I got the link but just listened again (and again) and decided to burn it for my car. I hope they do well. It will be nice to get something new into mainstream.
Monica-that link you got was unfinished and unmastered. It was also missing some songs. Pick up the CD…it’s a whole different listening experience when you hear it.
No, Huck gave me all the songs… (I earned them “wink wink”) I bought one today I think If my gc worked.
I think those hits are legit! theyre already gettin airplay here in Chicago and I heard them on Fuel TV with Tony Hawk skatin to their song Badass! Some bands just blow the f**k up in a hurry, especially if its good.
What station in Chicago is playing it?
ha ha i noticed that about their page. hit refresh and the hits jump like 200. it’s ok. a bands gotta do what a bands gotta do. they don’t have to do it but if it works for them cool.
great r&r though! that dude can sing! i agree and give them an 8! can’t afford to buy it either until the next unemp cheque but will! who needs food.
These guys got to be doing something right. Their myspace got over 200 hits in under a minute. (??) Music’s cool. If I had a job I would buy it.
I never thought about the Kid Rock ripoff but yeah, I see it. I think the CD is great. I also already have the music and don’t need to buy it again but when I see it used I’ll pick it up. So the originality isn’t there, but it does give a throw-back to the 80’s which is their decade.
Hi… I wrote a song for KIDROCK! thanks so much for the Nod!
Rock out!
~ Huck
And yes I wrote the song “I AM” featured on Bob’s self titled record “KID ROCK” pick it up along with our record today! Thanks again! And Rock out!
~Huck
This CD gets better & better with every listen. If you prefer the shit that is infesting the airwaves disguised as rock music, then more power to you. I’ll sit back and crank up my Black Robot CD again.
I along with many had the opportunity to hear this months ago and in this economy isn’t high on my list to purchase. I give the overall record a 6. The appeal definitely will be with the older crowd.
THANKS SHELLY ANNA! But arent you part of the Older crowd? lol
dumped! 🙂
I respectfully disagree. And if this lacks orginality, please do tell where you hear this type of music on the radio?! I stand by what I said: this album is amazing.
Amazing is a little much. The record is average at best. Would have liked to see a little more originality. I agree that Baddass is my least favotire. A little tired. Kind of a Kid Rock American Baddass ripoff.
I wrote the lyrics to Baddass as an homage and a poke at KIDROCK, we have a history! He’s a powerhouse success that may take himself a bit to seriously sometimes.. tongue and cheek 😉 thanks for being observant! Rock out! ~huck
I think its funny that you called it a KIDROCK rippoff!! lol considering American Badass is a Metallica song! As for originality…Its all been done and KidRock is the KING of doing it again! Granted Baddass isnt my favorite either but reading Huck’s response (If it is really Huck) I get more of an Idea about the lyric. It does pay homage and make fun! I think thats genius! So far I have 3 favs MOMMA DONT CRY is Awesome! and I’M IN LOVE is a HIT fo sho! Fun Police, I hope you arent in the music business.
Yes, it’s Huck.
This album is amazing from start to finish! Black Robot definitely posses what is missing in rock music today! Baddass is actually one of my least favorites but I can certainly understand the appeal there. Dissatisfaction is my absolute favorite! Buy this album! You won’t be sorry!
