Extreme To Tour With Kings X

EXTREME will make their much-anticipated return to the stage this summer in support of Saudades de Rock (pronounced “sow-dodge”), their first studio album in 13 years. The multi-platinum, Boston-bred band’s 2008 Take Us Alive world tour gets underway on July 29th at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and will be anchored by a hometown gig two days later at the Bank of America Pavilion. In advance of the tour, Extreme will be a co-headliner on July 11th at the five day Rocklahoma Festival in Pryor, OK.

The iconic rock foursome – vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, bassist Pat Badger and new drummer Kevin Figueiredo – will be supported by KING’S X on all North American dates. Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp will offer additional support dates.

Information on the groundbreaking new album Saudades de Rock– which was produced by Bettencourt at L.A.’s NRG studios and is planned for release to coincide with the tour–is forthcoming. Fans can expect the same unwavering songcraft and diverse musical approach that made Extreme legendary. Simply put, Extreme’s fifth studio offering – which boasts the infectious roar of ‘Star’, the groove-laden swagger of ‘King’, a raw funk rock anthem called ‘Learn To Love’, and the expressive ballad ‘Ghost’ – just may be its finest hour yet.

As excited as the members of Extreme are by their latest musical accomplishment, they can’t wait to take it to the stage.

“As much as we enjoy recording, for me, I’ve always loved playing live for the fans,” Cherone says. “We can’t wait to get out there and play this music.”

“We wanted to record as much of the new album as possible live in the studio,” Bettencourt adds. “And because of it, these songs will translate easily to the stage. We’re really looking forward to getting out on tour, putting on a show. That’s really where the band shines.”

“We always knew Extreme was special,” the guitarist says of the completion of Extreme’s long-awaited fifth album. “We always knew it was a matter of time.”

The Grammy-nominated Extreme have released four studio albums to date, plus a greatest hits set. Selling over 10 million records worldwide on the strength of multiple world tours, the group achieved a 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1991 with ‘More Than Words‘. Culled from their 1990 multi-platinum album, Extreme II: Pornograffitti, the disc also produced the Top 5 hit ‘Hole Hearted’.

Although these two acoustic hits brought the band great mainstream success, they overshadowed the band’s trademark sound: a mix of hard rock funk in the spirit and style of their predecessors in LED ZEPPELIN, AEROSMITH, QUEEN and VAN HALEN. Fueled by Bettencourt’s signature guitar flights and Cherone’s resonant vocals, the band’s socially conscious lyrics set them apart from their peers. In 1992, the band was asked by Queen’s Brian May to perform at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert. As the world watched, the band earned considerable credibility within and beyond the hard rock fraternity.

Extreme’s tour schedule has been updated and is now as follows:

Saving Abel - S/T (Release Year - 2008)

Mississippi isn’t exactly well known for its rock heritage. The five gentlemen from Saving Abel could change that soon.

The band already has a radio hit with their song, Addicted, and judging from the other songs on their debut, this is just the first taste of success for Saving Abel.

At first, I was ready to dismiss, Saving Abel, as another Nickelback clone, but after a couple of spins, I thought their music has a slightly heavier edge. Some songs fall into that safe radio ready rock area, but as a whole I found this CD highly listenable.

Jared Weeks has a very clean sounding voice, and it really starts to shine on some of the slow to mid tempo numbers. I can hear some southern rock influences in Saving Abel’s music, although it isn’t predominant throughout the record, it is obviously a factor in the songs 18 Days and Drowning (Face Down).

The record has several hit worthy tunes include the heavier numbers, New Tattoo, In God’s Eyes, and 18 Days.

If you are a fan of mainstream rock, you will probably like this record a lot. If you are an old school 80’s rock fan, this album may not excite you as much. There really isn’t a band song on this disc, and it is available for the paltry sum of $7.99 at Amazon.com. You can listen to several of the tunes here at the Saving Abel myspace page. Check ‘em out.

Tesla - Bust A Nut (Release Year - 1994)

In 1994, hard rock was on life support. Unless a band was wearing flannel and sung about how much their life sucked, chances are they didn’t get any airplay.

During this time, Tesla managed to sneak out one of their better releases. Sadly, Bust A Nut fell under the radar for many rock fans.

Bust A Nut, is one of Tesla’s heavier records, but their are plenty of tunes on this disc that are very much in the style that Tesla fans have grown accustomed to.

The first three songs on Bust a Nut have the heaviest guitar riffs, I have ever heard Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch record, but Jeff Keith’s raspy voice has a way of keeping Tesla’s music from venturing too far into the metal realm.

Bust a Nut has several hits that Tesla often performs live including Try So Hard, Shine Away, and the excellent Mama’s Fool.

There are some other excellent heavy cuts including Action Talks, Cry and Earth Mover. This album also features the Tesla live staple, A Lot To Lose.

If the album has any faults, it would be the Joe South cover song, Games People Play, which doesn’t really fit the mood of the album, in my opinion. The song is good, but it seems out of place.

Out of the entire Tesla discography, only Mechanical Resonance gets more airplay from me. Bust a Nut is a killer heavy record that should be in the collection of every hard rock fan. You can find copies of this record, for next to nothing at Amazon.com.

“No End In Sight” For Foreigner

Foreigner is taking a backward glance at its career this summer with
No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner,” due July 15 on Rhino. The two-disc set contains hits from throughout the group’s 41-year career, plus a new song and three other new recordings.

Classic tracks on the set include “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Urgent,” “Waiting For a Girl Like You” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

The new recordings comprise recent lives takes of “Starrider,” which originally hails from Foreigner’s self-titled 1977 debut album, and a “Juke Box Hero”/”Whole Lotta Love” medley; an acoustic version of the 1987 hit “Say You Will“; and the brand new “Too Late,” which will be released as a single.

“I’m amazed that the songs do have that staying power,” Foreigner founder, guitarist and chief songwriter Mick Jones tells Billboard.com. “I don’t really listen to the old records a lot, so you tend to forget there are this many songs that made the kind of mark they have.”

“Too Late,” meanwhile, represents the first new Foreigner track since 1994’s “Mr. Moonlight” and the first recorded output from the latest lineup of the band, which includes Jason Bonham on drums, former Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson and former Hurricane frontman Kelly Hansen. Jones says there are also plans afoot for an all-new Foreigner album, hopefully sooner than later.

“There’s a long-range plan now that we really do have a great lineup of the band again,” he says. “It’s very exciting. Everyone’s committed to the long haul here.”

“No End in Sight” comes out the same day as Foreigner begins a nine-date co-headlining tour with Bryan Adams in Augusta, Maine. The group will also play its own dates beginning July 29 in Clearfield, Pa., as of now wrapping on the 31st in Jackson, N.J.

Badlands - S/T (Release Year - 1989)

After coming off of the Ozzy Osbourne, Ultimate Sin tour, Jake E. Lee, formed Badlands with singer Ray Gillen.

If you were a fan of Jake E. Lee’s awesome metal guitar licks on Ozzy disc, The Ultimate Sin, then you may have found his work on Badlands a surprise, as on this disc, he moved in a more bluesy, hard rock direction.

As much as I enjoyed Lee’s work with Ozzy, it wasn’t until his work with Bandlands where he truly shined. Jake E. Lee’s awesome guitar licks, combined with Ray Gillen’s incredible voice is one potent combination, and it shows on the brilliant debut record from Badlands.

This record didn’t chart as high as some of other hair metal acts at the time, but Badlands sound nothing like the majority of the acts from the 80’s. If anything their music was ahead of its time. It is excellent, bluesy hard rock that still sounds incredible to this day. I still consider this one of my top ten records of all time.

Sadly, this record is out of print, and prices for it are starting to soar on the internet. Hopefully, this record will get reissued, as music this good needs to be heard by rock fans who would like to check it out. Grab this if you can find it! Happy Hunting!

Soundstone - Scratchin’ At My Door (Release Year - 2007)

If the the four gentlemen in Northern Ireland’s Soundstone have their way, they will soon be following their countrymen The Answer, into the mainstream.

Their three song EP, Scratchin’ At My Door is a modern rock CD that has a sound with elements of 70’s classic rock, and a small bit of 80’s hard rock. The tunes are good enough for current rock fans to digest, and could easily work on rock radio today.

Adrian McAleenan has some very cool guitar solos. Declan Bannon’s vocals are pretty good. His sound reminds me of a cross between Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother, and a small dash of Ian Astbury from the Cult.

Scratchin’ At My Door shows a lot of promise for this Irish four piece. I hope they put out a full length disc for us to listen to soon.

Imperial Vipers - Another Suicide - Free Download

‘Another Suicide’, the controversial new song from the Imperial Vipers is finally being released by the band as a free download after fans inundated them with messages urging them to make it available. Originally held back by record label bosses due to the sensitive nature of the lyrical content, the band are finally bowing to demand on the back of another tragic loss of young life in the Bridgend area of south Wales.

Written in the summer of last year, ‘Another Suicide’ is a cutting and highly accurate criticism of the way in which suicide is viewed by society, and how too often these tragedies are overlooked and dismissed as the norm in many parts of the country by the media and politicians alike. The line, ‘And the policeman said; it’s just another suicide’ reflects perfectly the tone set by the rest of the song and the message the band are desperate to get across – something needs to be done.

The single will be available as free analogue download from the Imperial Vipers Myspace page www.myspace.com/imperialvipers from today for a limited period and will feature on the forthcoming Steve Power produced album ‘The Sickness’, which continues the trend of intelligent and astute social commentary delivered with a rock edge.

Currently previewing material from the new album at a series of gigs around the UK, the band will be appearing at a number of festivals throughout the summer including a headline slot at the Goldcoast Oceanfest in June.

Sink or Swim Video - Five Finger Death Punch - The Bleeding

Five Finger Death Punch is also a late addition to the Rock on the Range Music Festival. The band has a new CD that came out in July 2007, called Way of the Fist. Check out the video for the Bleeding below.

Testament - The Formation of Damnation (Release Year - 2008)

It has been a long time since we have a disc of new material from Testament. 1999 to be exact.

Fans of the band have been clamoring for new material for ages. With The Formation of Damnation, everyone will get their wish.

Testament returns with a powerful new album that should make them the new kings of Bay Area Thrash Metal. I must admit that I had low expectations for this record, which is why it BLEW ME AWAY! Testament still has every bit of the fire that made them a thrash metal favorite.

Chuck Billy has survived his batter with cancer, and with The Formation of Damnation, he sounds like he is out to conquer the world. Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson absolutely shred on this disc. I haven’t heard guitar playing this good on a metal record in a very long time.

Testament has one beast of a rhythm section with Greg Christian on bass, and Paul Bostaph on Drums. Bostaph’s rapid fire drumming is awesome. His drum sound is excellent on this record.

With some of Testament’s past releases, some songs are hit or miss, but with The Formation of Damnation, I can’t find any songs that I dislike. In fact, Testament made me remember why I love thrash metal in the first place. The songs are heavy, blood pumping, heavy metal beasts, that attack your senses with an audible fury that shakes you to your core.

Headbangers can rejoice. Testament has released one aggressive, Pit Bull of a record. 80’s style Bay Area Thrash is back! Thrash Metal fans and metalheads in general need to buy this record now! I highly recommend it.

You can preview new tracks on the Testament E-Card at this location. Metalheads around the world need to buy this record now! This is the best heavy metal record of 2008!

Preview Richie Kotzen’s Live in San Paolo

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the European release ofLive In Sao Paulo“, Richie Kotzen’s first-ever live album on July 4th 2008. With much prompting from fans, Kotzen chose for the purpose a stellar performance from his South American tour in 2007.

Live in Sao Paulois an absorbing collective blend of Kotzen’s songs throughout the years. His live performance reflects the guitar style’s that has defined his career as a virtuoso. Kotzen reveals to fans live his true diversity with the rhythmic labours of “A Love Divine” to the poignant ballad “Remember”. The performance continually travels between moments of classic-rock song “Shapes of Things”, to the uplifting original “Stand”.

Kotzen is influenced from such bands as Bad Company, Free, early Van Halen and Cream. They are the inspiration for his songs, but having deep Philly roots Kotzen tends to combine rock with the Motown influences he heard as a kid. “Much influence for my songs comes from the likes of the Spinners, O-Jays, and Curtis Mayfield”, explains Kotzen. “Growing up outside Philadelphia and listening to those old soul stations I ended up with that sound being a heavy influence in my writing even though the core of what I do is Rock”.

Kotzen burst onto the heavy metal scene as a teenager with a lightning-fast guitar techniques. With his talents, Kotzen has played with some of the best musicians; securing such major collaboration with the band Mr. Big and renowned jazz great Stanley Clarke as well as his own solo projects. “I have been lucky, in the sense, that I have been able to play with guys who I could learn from. The biggest musical lesson for me was playing in a band with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. Obviously these guys are jazz musicians and I am not, but I learned so much from the time we recorded and toured together. My favourite rock bassist is Billy Sheehan and we were in Mr. Big together for 3 years which was awesome”.

Live In Sao Paulotracklisting includes:

Socialite; High; Remember; Fooled Again; Faith; So Cold; A Love Divine; Shapes Of Things; Doin’ What The Devil Says To Do; I’m Losing You; Mother Head’s Family Reunion; Stand.

Dokken - Lightning Strikes Again (Release Year - 2008)

Many of the artists who were highly successful in the 80’s have tried reigniting their careers with sounds that take listeners back to their heyday. Whitesnake, Def Leppard and House of Lords have all released discs that their fans should be pleased with. Dokken tries to recapture the lightning, or sound that once made them famous as well.

George Lynch and Jeff Pilson have long been absent from the band. In fact, the current lineup of Dokken, Brown, Sparks and Levin, is one of the longest running for Dokken, since the bands’ most successful discs from the mid to late 80’s. It is ironic that this lineup, tries to emulate the sound of the Lynch/Pilson era. Jon Levin does a damn good George Lynch imitation, and he really cuts loose on this record. Don Dokken recruited none other than Jeff Scott Soto to sing back up vocals on this record, and it really does make a difference. That unfortunately is where the good ends and the bad begins.

In 2008, Don Dokken has very limited range with his vocals. He doesn’t take the chances that he used to in the 80’s, and that is what made their music interesting, and exciting. I am assuming that Don can’t hit the high notes anymore, as he doesn’t bother to try on Lightning Strikes Again. He stays within his own comfort zone, and as a result, the songs on this disc lack the fire of the band’s earlier material. On certain songs, Don sounds like he strains to hit the notes that he use to hit with ease.

As much as I wanted to enjoy this record, I found the songs limp and uninspiring. There are three or four songs on this disc that are above average, but the majority of the material is sub par in my opinion. The music sounds close to their original stuff from the 80’s, but without the powerful vocals that these songs deserve, they come out sounding somewhat below average. After three lackluster albums since the year 2000, I believe it is time for the band Dokken to hang it up. Lightning did not strike again for this listener.

New Video - Disturbed - Inside the Fire

CLAY’S PARK PRESENTS THE 5TH ANNNUAL ROCK N RESORT MUSIC FESTIVAL’s NATIONAL LINE-UP FEATURING 7 LEGENDARY ROCK BANDS; GIN BLOSSOMS, MOLLY HATCHET, SWEET, SANTANA ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER GREGG ROLIE, NAZARETH WITH MANNY CHARLTON, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVISITED AND BLUE OYSTER CULT.

MOLLY HATCHET – FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2008.

In the early 1970’s a new form of music was emerging in the south. A mixture of blues, country, gospel and the English invasion of rock and roll that later was to be coined the phrase “Southern Rock.” The music was filled with style and emotion and with bands in the forefront such as the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and a band from Jacksonville, Florida called Molly Hatchet. Named after a famous 17th century axe murderess Hatchet Molly who would behead her lovers with the hand tool Lizzy Borden made famous.

Their self-titled debut album which included Danny Joe Brown, Dave Hlubeck, Duane Roland, Steve Holland, Banner Thoman and Bruce Crump in the lineup was released on Epic records in 1978 and reached multi-platinum status as the band established their reputation of working hard, playing tough and living fast through intense touring with such bands as Aerosmith, Bob Seger, The Rolling Stones and many more.

In 1979, Flirtin With Disaster was released and history was in the making. The band continued touring on the road with an average of 250 live shows per year and like the first album it also achieved multi-platinum status.

After the death of lead singer, Danny Joe Brown the band claims to now draw inspiration from form him as they continue the spiritual, emotional and hard driving southern rock tradition the band is so well known for.

GIN BLOSSOMS – FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2008.

Gin Blossoms, the inventive and instantly appealing smart rock band of the early nineties has reunited after a difficult breakup, and stirring reunion to complete their latest album, Major Lodge Victory. Other hits include “Hey Jealousy”, “Found Out About You”, “As Long As It Matters”, “Follow You Down”, “‘Til I hear It From You”, “Until I Fall Away” and “Allison Road”.

NAZARETH WITH MANNY CHARLTON - SATURDAY, JULY 19, 2008.

According to Manny Charlton, he was there FROM THE BEGINNING and was the guiding light that wrote the original material and recorded the demos of Nazareth’s early songs which landed management and ultimately their major record deals which led to their smash hits “Hair of the Dog”, “Razamanaz”, “Expect No Mercy” and “Love Hurts”. The rest as they say is history.

Charlton wrote, produced and defined the NAZARETH sound that was so successful in the 70’s. Five of Nazareth’s albums, produced by Manny in the 70’s, all achieved Gold or Platinum status in various countries throughout the world. Deep Purple’s Roger Glover, one of the band’s earlier mentors, identified Charlton as “THE SOUL OF NAZARETH”.

SANTANA ORIGINAL LEAD SINGER GREGG ROLIE – SATURDAY, JULY 19, 2008.

Gregg Rolie is responsible for co-founding two phenomenally popular, multi-platinum many times over super groups that indeed are, SANTANA and JOURNEY. In 1998, the world class keyboardist-vocalist-producer was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the original Santana band. In addition to launching- along with Carlos Santana- the now legendary act, Rolie also co-produced their first four ground-breaking albums. What’s more, his singing talents will forever be immortalized by his unforgettable lead vocals on classic Santana greatest hits including “Black Magic Woman”, “Evil Ways” and the Tito Puente composition “Oye Como Va”.

Thirty-five years after Gregg and Carlos fortuitously met in San Francisco, the year 2001 marked the release of Rolie’s third solo album ROOTS, featuring the lead track “Give It To Me”. The first-ever release on Bay Area-based Tower Records’ new proprietary label 33rd Street, and Rolie’s first CD following a several year personal hiatus. ROOTS find Gregg revisiting the incredible brew of sounds he helped conjure up in the late ’60’s. Recalling those heady days, he remembers “It was an amazing time. We created something that no one could fathom…it was about the rhythms and solos more than the songs. It wasn’t Latin music, rock music, the blues—not any of the above. It was a combination of all of them”. Rolie calls ROOTS’ twelve original selections “Latin rock plus… the instrumentation is Latin percussion, with organ, guitar, horns, and lots of great solo work and songwriting”, adding that “I really wanted to go all the way back to my Santana roots”.

SWEET– SATURDAY, JULY 19, 2008.

The Sweet, originally formed by bassist Steve Priest, vocalist Brian Connolly & drummer Mick Tucker, rose to fame in the 70’s with such hits as “Ballroom Blitz”, “Fox on the Run”, “Love is Like Oxygen”, “Little Willy”, “Hellraiser”, “Teenage Rampage”, “Blockbuster”, “Action” and many others, has reformed in the States led by bassist/vocalist Steve Priest.

Steve is joined by guitarist Stuart Smith who was taught by Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore and went on to play in a version of “Sweet” with Steve Priest in the late 80’s and then with Keith Emerson in a band called “The Aliens of Extraordinary Ability” before forming his own band “Heaven & Earth” in 1997.

In 1998 Smith released a critically acclaimed album called “Heaven & Earth featuring Stuart Smith” with guest appearances by Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), Kelly Hansen (Hurricane/Foreigner), Carmine Appice (Rod Stewart/Jeff Beck/Vanilla Fudge), Bobby Kimball(Toto) and Steve Priest. This album won Stuart the “Best Guitarist” and “Album of the Year” award two years in a row at The Los Angeles All Access Music Awards”.

On drums is renowned drummer Richie Onori who, as well as playing with Stuart Smith in “The Aliens of Extraordinary Ability” and “Heaven & Earth” has also played with Louis Johnson, Bobby Kimball and Rick Derringer. Rounding out the line up is powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta from Queen Nation, and keyboard player Stevie Stewart from The World Classic Rockers.
Sweet promises all the hits and more played as they were meant to be heard and with an energetic stage show that is second to none.

BLUE OYSTER CULT– SUNDAY, JULY 20, 2008.

For nearly three decades, Blue Oyster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. Indeed, the Long Island, NY based band is revered within the hard rock and heavy metal scene for its pioneering work.
That tradition continues with the June 5, 2001, release of Curse of the Hidden Mirror on CMC International Records, a division of the Sanctuary Records Group.

Blue Oyster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it’s one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success. The band is often cited as a major influence by other acts such as Metallica, and BOC was listed in VH1’s countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all time.

Upon the release of BOC’s self-titled debut album in 1972, the band was praised for its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyrics that could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song. BOC’s canon includes three stone-cold classic songs that will waft through the cosmos long after the sun has burned out: The truly haunting “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” from 1976’s Agents of Fortune, the pummeling “Godzilla” from 1977’s Specters’ and the hypnotically melodic “Burnin’ for You” from 1981’s Fire of Unknown Origin. Other notable BÖC songs include “Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll,” “Then Came the Last Days of May,” “I Love the Night,” “In Thee,” “Veteran of the Psychic Wars,” “Dominance and Submission,” “Astronomy,” “Black Blade” and “Shooting Shark.”

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVISITED – SUNDAY, JULY 20, 2008.

Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo”, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rhythm section (bass and drums respectively) from the legendary group Creedence Clearwater Revival launched the Creedence Clearwater Revisited project in 1995 to once again perform live Creedence Clearwater Revival hits - touchstones of a generation. Though the pair initially only planned to play private parties, Creedence Clearwater Revisited now performs up to 100 shows a year and has released the album “Recollection.”
Creedence Clearwater Revisited brings to life, with authentic integrity, the classic hits that made CCR legendary including, “I Put A Spell on You”, “Bad Moon Rising”, “Proud Mary”, “Down on The Corner”, “Who’ll Stop the Rain” and “Travelin Band”.
